NEWS A COMMON RESPONSE/PROPOSAL – A* Desk, Brumaria, SalonKritik
It is important to appreciate this institution’s initiative in opening the first space for debate and reflection, as it stems from its responsibility, insofar as it is an institution, to ensure that independent spaces can exist and become stronger. During our encounter we discovered what we already knew: that the attempt to carry out this work of generating such a massive critique entails a great many problems that seem pertinent to confront though a multitude of perspectives, taking on different interests and discursive positionings, but with one common impulse. The meeting at the MUSAC served to locate and raise some of those problems that can help us to establish a horizon of shared work: the economic precariousness of the whole initiative, an editorial one in this case, that tries to combat, or resist, the banal drift—spectacularized, vulgarized, superficial, and self-indulgent—of the world of culture; the demand for a poorly understood economic or ideological independence, which appears in the horizon as a false object, unreachable in its totality, attainable only to a degree that varies according to current factors; this, on top of the immobilism of academia—reactionary, ineffective, incapable of realizing their function as a critical independent agency and of establishing a dialogue with other agencies; the relations with institutions, avid to capitalize on any initiative that can provide them with a quota of legitimizing “counter-hegemony”; and, perhaps most worrisome, the lack of valid and involved interlocutors with whom to start a serious and rigorous debate and the silence of a “public” that integrates itself in—and not only attends to—said debate. In this respect, and in regards to this last point, the encounter makes us moderately optimistic. We are witnesses to the appearance—or the more or less precarious survival—of some platforms, the organization of new spaces and disensual projects, the emergence of a great number of readers-writers; this makes us believe in the possibility of constructing—from top to bottom?—a connected and strengthened field of work that forces a rupture and a permanent critical exercise with respect to present cultural dynamics.
